The Battle of Iwo Jima's black sand invasion beaches - and the US Marines' almighty struggle across them - were made famous by Hollywood's Sands of Iwo Jima. While Iwo Jima is now closed to the general public, visitors have collected Iwo Jima beach sand and put it up for sale.
This gavel from my collection was made from the teak of USS Oklahoma, sunk 79 years ago in the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The shells of shipworms that lived in it during World War II are still inside!
